Common Questions About Pelvic Physical Therapy

pelvic physical therapist

At Two Rabbits Physical Therapy, we specialize in pelvic floor physical therapy for patients in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, New Market, Frederick and the surrounding Maryland region. Below are some of the most common questions our patients ask when seeking care for pelvic health, postpartum recovery, and birth preparation.

What does a typical pelvic physical therapy session look like?

During your private one-hour session with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, you’ll start with an in-depth conversation about your health history, symptoms, and personal goals. Your therapist will perform a comprehensive pelvic floor evaluation and movement analysis, tailored to your unique needs. Together, you’ll create a personalized plan of care that fits your lifestyle, schedule, and health priorities.

Most first visits include an initial treatment session as well: covering pelvic anatomy education, prognosis, and self-care strategies. You’ll leave with specific home exercises, modifications, and recommendations to start your recovery right away.

What does pelvic physical therapy include?

At Two Rabbits Physio, a typical treatment plan may involve:

  • Patient education to help you understand your body and symptoms
  • Therapeutic exercise to restore strength, coordination, and mobility
  • Manual therapy for pain relief, scar tissue mobility, and pelvic alignment

Every treatment begins with a thorough evaluation by a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy, ensuring your plan of care is designed just for you.

How soon after giving birth can I begin postpartum pelvic physical therapy?

Postpartum recovery is different for every person. Some patients can safely begin postpartum pelvic floor therapy as early as 1 week after delivery if external symptoms are present. In most cases, however, we recommend waiting until you’ve been cleared by your OB-GYN or midwife, which is typically around 6 weeks postpartum.

If you’re experiencing pain, incontinence, diastasis recti, or other symptoms, reach out to our Baltimore pelvic health team for guidance on the right timing for your care.

Can pelvic physical therapy help with birth preparation?

Yes! At Two Rabbits Physio, we support patients throughout the pregnancy journey from conception through postpartum.

  • Preconception: strategies to optimize pelvic health for conception
  • During pregnancy: one visit each trimester to learn exercises that support posture, strength, continuation of activity, minimizing discomfort and labor and birth preparation. This includes prevention of diastasis recti, learning perineal massage to minimize risk of tearing, and trimester specific pelvic floor and core exercises and stretches.
  • Birth preparation: customized guidance for pelvic mobility, pushing strategies, and pain management

If you are currently pregnant, we request written consent from your OB or midwife for any internal examination. This can be emailed to us prior to your visit or brought with you to your first appointment.

Do you offer biofeedback for pelvic floor therapy?

Yes, we do. Instead of relying on a machine, our physical therapists use a manual biofeedback approach: allowing us to directly assess pelvic floor muscle function in real time. This method is often more accurate and effective for teaching patients how to properly engage or relax their pelvic muscles.

How many pelvic physical therapy visits will I need?

The number of visits depends on your specific condition, progress, and goals. At Two Rabbits Physio, we take an integrative approach and typically do not see patients more than once per week. Many patients start with biweekly sessions and then gradually space out visits as they improve.

We’ll collaborate with you to find the right treatment frequency that balances recovery, progress, and your lifestyle.

What does the initial evaluation include?

Your first visit at Two Rabbits Physical Therapy in Baltimore or Frederick  includes:

  • A holistic, trauma-informed intake conversation
  • A full pelvic floor, orthopedic, strength and movement assessment based on your needs
  • Education about your condition and pelvic health
  • A customized plan of care with tailored exercises and self care techniques to practice at home

This evaluation gives you a clear path forward and ensures your pelvic physical therapy is fully individualized.
